On August 01, our youngest son took his own life, leaving behind his wife and triplet four-year-old daughters. Two days later, my daughter-in-law found out that she was pregnant (our son did not know). Three days ago, our daughter-in-law found out the baby was not alive. We are deeply grieving. Several loving friends have tried to encourage us with the commonly held saying: “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.” As I have pondered that statement in recent days, it does not align with the Bible. People base that comment on 1 Cor. 10:13, a verse that talks about temptation to sin. But even that verse says that God helps the person being tempted. Nothing touches my life apart from God’s permissive will. The psalmist wrote, “Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 63:7; NLT). But Paul’s point in 2 Corinthians 12 is that he CANNOT handle what God has permitted in his life. Paul wrote, “Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weakness, so that the power of Christ can work through me” (2 Cor. 12:8-9; NLT). God HAS given me more than I can handle. Because He has, my only hope is to depend on His enabling grace. I must lean into Jesus’ promise, “My grace is all you need.” Lord Jesus, I need that grace today. The pic is my wife hesitantly climbing down the Cliffs of Arbel in Israel.
